Made from hydrated aluminium potassium sulphate it is used as antiseptic acts as an astringent when it's mixed with water and rubbed onto the skin.

By constricting blood vessels and tightening pores the alum block can stop bleeding, so next time you nip your skin shaving and it just won't stop bleeding think of how much easier your shave would be if you only had an alum block. Simply wet the block and rub gently over the torn area. I will ask that you use your brain here if it's a serious injury the block isn’t going to work.

An alum block is an antibacterial that will protect the skin's surface layer and provide a cooling sensation. If you have irritated the skin by shaving too aggressively the alum block might sting your face for a few minutes, if this happens just wash your face with cold water and go easier next time.
